An ambitious sorcerer -- a nefarious lord -- a kingdom at war
From master storyteller Vickie M. Briscoe, the author of A Legacy Arcane and A Medallion Sundered, comes The Miscreant of Takkarrai, a work of fantasy fiction that is unnerving, dramatic, and sublime. In an enchanted world of sorcerers, lords, and epic battles, Briscoe engages young adults and adults in what is best described as a fable about the misguided recklessness of avaricious greed, and how the sin of hubris can go beyond a single individual to endanger an entire community.
When Garrette attains the first degree of the Cupreous Coterie or sorcerer's guild, his accomplishment does nothing but stoke his inner fire of self-interest. A handful of Coterie masters do what they can to prevent the power-hungry sorcerer from reaching the primary level, but Garrette is unstoppable—and his thirst for power knows no limits and has no conscience.
On a mission to take over the Kingdom of Takkarrai, Garrette first aligns himself with the court of the evil Lord Rodelar, and convinces him that he should take control of the kingdom from King Alton. Garrette also convinces the easily corruptible Lord Rhlarte to assist with the coup. They hire foreign armies to help in the battle, and head toward their first target, the land overseen by King Alton’s closest friend, Lord Arlyn. Using his spells along with the master plan, Garrette is able to wreak havoc on the once peaceful kingdom. With his minions, he fights and defeats the cities of Itoches, Ipplan, and Dacchus, while King Alton’s forces give their all to prevent the capturing of the cities of Nekkono and Cyoteau. Tragedy strikes close to home for Lord Arlyn who loses two of his sons and his only daughter, while his remaining son, Darian, is put under a spell that traps him in the body of a black stallion.

She becomes friends with Darian, who through an enchantment, is trapped in the form of a splendid ebony stallion. Like Marta, Mendiana's guardian, Darian reminds Mendiana that she must be patient and that knowledge will come. Marta leads Mendiana back to the Garden of the Ancients, where the girl learns her true name from the voices in the fountains. Falling under the power of Rondar, Mendiana is powerless to break the engagement of marriage foisted upon her.
From episodes of violence and then escape, terror and then love, fantasy writer Vickie Briscoe creates a character who, through truth and knowledge, learns to use her powers, while at the same time setting free herself, her people and her heart.
